How I’m going to go about reaching my goals…

I have four goals for the MyClimb Fall Project Challenge 2017:

  1. Boulder V3 consistently.
  2. Climb 5.10a consistently.
  3. Lose 25 pounds.
  4. Learn the basics of trad climbing.

Now, I know those sound like big leaps, and they are.  I have run through it in my head, though, and I believe that if I apply myself, they are within reach before the 01 Nov 2017 deadline.  That won’t be the end of my journey, of course, but those are the goals I’ll be focused on for the next three months.

So how am I going to do it?  My friend Lou asked me to run my plans by him as to how I’m going to accomplish my goals.  First, I will climb and climb and climb…and climb hard!  I will continue climbing every day, but I will be much more training-oriented about my climbing.  I have goals now.  I will work on my weaknesses.  I will attempt new moves and harder problems and routes.  I will work on my determination and willpower to finish my projects and build strength of character and resolve.  Second, I will incorporate some weight-lifting and cardio (walking, hiking, biking) into my daily routine.  I will build strength and endurance this way.  Third, I will change my diet.  I will eat more fish, nuts, and whole grains while cutting out high fructose corn syrup, high-sugar/high-calorie drinks and foods, and large portions.  I will eat four to six small “meals” a day, totaling no more than 1500 calories per day.  I will continue to be well-hydrated, see my doctor regularly, and take my medications correctly.  Weight loss should follow, as should progress in my climbing abilities.  As far as trad climbing basics go, Lou is going to have to teach me that, so we’ll have to get together and have some fun climbing!

I look forward to the results of this challenge.  These next three months are going to be brutal.  I know that.  They’re going to be brutal like Basic Military Training was, but I got through that with honors.  I know I’m 18 years older now, but I’ve still got that kind of fight in me.  I know it’s in there somewhere and I’m going to find it and dig it back out!!!
